Reclaiming Governance

Reclaiming governance means individuals educating themselves so that they may be their own governors, and helping the United States of America embody the ideals described in the declaration of independence, constitution and bill of rights.

War Resisters League
“...War Resisters League believes war is a crime against humanity. We use peaceful means to create a society that is democratic, free of economic, racial, and sexual oppression. The methods we use range from education to demonstrations to lobbying to nonviolent direct action-at all times trying to see those we oppose not as enemies, but as sisters and brothers.WRL is committed not only to eliminating war, but the causes of war-causes intricately linked to the violence that pervades our society. We know that even where there seems to be "peace," the suffering of homelessness, hunger, lack of medical care, and poverty is as violent to those upon whom it is imposed as any war. We search for an answer to the violence in our society not in the building of more prisons, but in programs that bring help to those in need.”

Program on Corporations, Law and Democracy
“Giant corporations govern, even though they are mentioned nowhere in our Constitution or Bill of Rights. So when corporations govern, democracy is nowhere to be found. There is something else: when people live in a culture defined by corporate values, common sense evaporates. We stop trusting our own eyes, ears, and feelings. Our minds become colonized. POCLAD invites you to work with us to change this. ...when they control our government - officials, judges, police, and the military all paid with our money - they make us into colonized subjects all over again. The United States got rid of kings long ago. It's supposed to be ‘We the People’ now, or so we thought. ...We are 11 activists working with individuals and existing groups to launch democratic insurgencies that put corporations once again subordinate to ‘We the People.’"

Democracy Now!
For true democracy to work, people need easy access to independent, diverse sources of news and information. But the last two decades have seen unprecedented corporate media consolidation. The U.S. media was already fairly homogenous in the early 80s: some fifty media conglomerates dominated all media outlets, including television, radio, newspapers, magazines, music, publishing and film. In the year 2000, just six corporations dominated the U.S. media. In addition, corporate media outlets in the U.S. are legally responsible to their shareholders to maximize profits. And U.S. “public” media outlets accept funding from major corporations, as well as from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Every Corporation for Public Broadcasting board member is appointed by the White House and confirmed by the Senate. Democracy Now! is funded entirely through contributions from listeners, viewers, and foundations. We do not accept advertisers, donations from corporations, or donations from governments. This allows us to maintain our independence.
