Why Organic Cotton?

Organic Cotton Baby ClothesThe many toxic chemicals used to grow conventional cotton pollute the air, the soil and our water--compromising the health of every being on the planet. In fact, cotton cultivation uses the most chemicals--pesticides, herbicides--per unit area of any crop. According to a 2006 report, conventional cotton is cultivated on 2.4% of the world's arable land, but uses about 11% of the world's pesticides. In addition, over 80% of conventional cotton grown in the U.S. is genetically modified. Genetic modification inserts genetic material into plants that would never occur through natural selection. The consequences and effects of this tampering can't be predicted.

Cotton can be cultivated using organic methods, as was done for thousands of years before "conventional" processes came along. Organic cultivation has been increasing in more and more countries around the world, including the U.S. Recently Egypt, for example, reduced pesticide use by 90% and saw their average cotton yield increase by 30%.

Organic Cotton SocksLook for organic cotton products and you'll find products with the great look and feel of cotton, and with the extra benefit of keeping our planet and our future healthier. Save the Corporations carries organic cotton baby clothing, yoga and loungewear, color-grown socks and soft bras, camisoles and underwear. Many of these products are made in the U.S. from domestically grown cotton. Organic cotton is a high quality fiber that's a socially and environmentally responsible choice.
